How to Build an AI Agent for Your Business: 7 Steps

Seven practical steps, the build-or-buy choice, and what Saudi organisations should check on data, Arabic and channels before launch.

Short answer: to build an AI agent for your business, pick one narrow job, collect the documents that answer it, decide what the agent must never do, connect only the systems it needs, test it with real customer messages in Arabic and English, and launch to a small audience with a clear way to reach a person. The rest of this guide walks through each step.

What an AI agent is, in one paragraph

An AI agent is an assistant that does more than answer: it understands a request, finds the information or takes the action the request needs, and reports back, within rules you set. A chatbot answers a question about an order; an agent can also look the order up. The difference matters because every action an agent can take is also an action it can take wrongly. We explain the distinction in more depth in AI agents vs AI chatbots.

Seven steps to build one

  1. 1. Choose one job, not ten"Answer order-status questions" or "check eligibility for a service" beats "handle customer service". Narrow agents earn trust; broad ones lose it at the first confident mistake.
  2. 2. Write down the questionsPull a month of real messages, in the customers' own words, including Saudi dialect and mixed Arabic-English. These become your test set.
  3. 3. Gather the source materialPolicies, price lists, procedures, FAQs. Answer quality follows document quality: a hundred well-kept documents beat a thousand contradictory ones.
  4. 4. Set the limitsList what it must never say or do: legal or medical advice, account changes it cannot verify, promises about prices. Decide when it hands over to a person.
  5. 5. Connect only what it needsA status agent needs read access to orders, not write access to payments. Keep actions narrow, reversible and logged.
  6. 6. Test in both languagesRun the test set in Arabic and English. Then ask ten questions your material does not answer and count how often it invents something.
  7. 7. Launch small, read transcriptsStart with one channel and a share of traffic. Read conversations weekly for the first month; customers will ask what nobody predicted.

Build, buy or configure?

Build from scratchFull control, but you own retrieval, Arabic handling, safety checks, handover, analytics and hosting. Realistic only with a dedicated AI team.
Use a general chatbot toolFast to start, but often weak on Arabic dialect, grounding in your documents, and data-location rules.
Configure an agent platformThe platform provides language handling, grounding, checks and handover; you provide the job, the documents and the rules. This is how custom agents on Elbi are set up.

What Saudi organisations should check

Data location and PDPL. Know where conversations are processed and how long they are kept. Our guide to PDPL and AI chatbots covers the questions to ask.

Arabic as it is really written and spoken. Dialect, short messages, voice notes and right-to-left interfaces. An agent tuned on formal Arabic understands the polished questions and misses the real ones.

The channel. Website chat, WhatsApp or voice each have their own rules. WhatsApp, for example, only allows free replies within a limited window after the customer's message.

Common mistakes

Starting with the technology

Choosing a model before choosing the job. The job decides almost everything else.

Feeding it marketing copy

Customers' questions are answered in policies and procedures, not brochures.

No way out

An agent that makes reaching a person hard looks efficient and quietly loses customers.

No baseline

Without a month of "before" numbers, nobody can show what the agent changed.

Common questions

Choose one narrow job, collect the documents that answer it, set limits and a handover rule, connect only the systems it needs, test with real messages in both languages, and launch to a small audience first.

Not on an agent platform, where the job, documents and rules are configured. Connecting it to internal systems such as a CRM or order database usually needs someone who knows those systems.

It depends mostly on how ready your documents and systems are, not on the technology. Preparing a clean set of source material is usually the longest step.

Yes, if it was built for both. Test it with Saudi dialect and mixed Arabic-English messages, and check that it replies in the language the customer used.
